Nice to know

Opening/closing hours, public holidays, currency, areas codes for France, Emergency phone numbers, advice for a trouble-free stay...

Climate
The French Riviera benefits from a Mediterranean-type climate, characterised by exceptional sunshine almost 300 days a year and mild temperatures for most of the year.
It rains heavily but infrequently mostly in March/April and October/November. In winter, freezing temperatures are rare, but sweaters are advised.

Opening hours
Shops are usually open from 9 am to 7 pm from Monday to Saturday. Department stores may stay open until 9 pm. Banks are open from 8.30 to 12 noon and 2 to 4.30 pm, Monday to Friday, with some branches opening on Saturday mornings and during lunch time.

Legal holidays
The 1st of January, Easter Monday, May 1st (May Day), May 8th (VE Day), Ascension Day (Thursday), Whit Monday, July 14th (Bastille Day), August 15th, November 1st (All Saints), November 11th (Armistice Day) and December 25th (Christmas).
On legal holidays, banks, government offices, shops, the majority of businesses and also many museums and tourist attractions are closed.

Money/currency
Credit cards are accepted in many shops, hotels and restaurants (there is usually a minimum amount of between €7 and €15). For cash, you will find cash-points on just about every street corner (24 hours a day).
Bank branches, exchange bureaux and some post offices handle currency exchange transactions and traveller's cheques. Whatever you are buying, prices are net.

Emergency phone numbers
Dial the following numbers (toll-free)
SAMU (medical emergencies): 15
Police emergency: 17
Fire-brigade: 18
European emergency call: 112

Calling
To call France in France: 0 + area number + number

A few tips for a pleasant trouble-free holiday
- You are strongly recommended to respect smoking/no smoking signs in public places.
- It is always useful to have a little cash on you at all times for little out-of-pocket expenses like taxi fares to the airport, drinks, etc.
- A service charge is included in the price of each item on the menu in any cafe or restaurant as required by French law. In theory, no further tipping is expected.
However, it is pretty common to leave something after a bite to eat or drink. But it’s never expected and is only given for good or attentive service, or at a place you habituate frequently. Extra generosity will never hurt.
- If you are driving, park only where authorised and respect speed limits on highways and motorways.

1. Your arrival

The two students of Verona (Enrico Fraccaroli and Residori Nicola) are coming by car and are not concerned by this message. One student of Algeria (in Lyon) Ahmed BOUBRIMA is arriving by train in Antibes (instructions in a separate mail). One Tunisian Marwa Guitouni is arriving at 10h20 and should use public transportation (see private mail).

All the others arrive between 16h55 and 18h00 and we have planned taxis to pick you up at the airport.
You are 22 in this case (see listing enclosed) in particular 14 on the flight Al Italia Roma Nice (it will be good if you already meet together in Roma).
The taxi driver will wait for you with a sign written Meddays (see the panel) and has for instructions to wait for all of you.

So do not disappear at the arrival, do not take another private taxi or shuttle and try to be grouped as much as possible.
In case of problem the phone number of the taxi is Transfert service +33 (0)6 09 50 92 53.

If you have any problem and for some unexpected reasons miss the plane please inform us as soon as possible by e-mail or by phone:
Magali +33 (0)6 61 87 92 41
or myself +33 (0)6 85 67 54 45

For some of you, it might be your first travel abroad. Look at the restrictions on what you can take with you (no liquid no scissors etc …) and be aware that nowadays controls to embark are long and tedious; so arrive widely in advance (tickets are not changeable …) and do not forget your passport.
Have a safe journey and looking forward to welcoming you on Wednesday.

PS: For the return we have also booked taxis (see listing) to take you back from CIV to Nice airport.
For those travelling later in the day or staying in Nice you can reach Nice downtown easily from the airport (advices can be given during the meddays).

2. Your accommodation at CIV

A bedroom and a dinner have been booked for you along with the breakfast at CIV.

Except special cases it is booked from Tuesday February 17th till Saturday 21st.
The reception desk has a list with your name on and will give you your room keys at your arrival and will explain where to go to for dinner.
Dinner is served between 18h30 and 20h30.
Last dinner served at 20h30.

3. How to reach the Campus SophiaTech from CIV

On Wednesday all the presentations will be held at the building FORUM at campus SophiaTech (see the map).
You have to be there at 9h30 the latest (registrations).

You can come by walking 25 minutes.
We advice you to take one of the buses 1, 12, 22 or 100 leaving Gare Routière near CIV (called GR and sometimes called "Les Messugues").
Be careful the buses are not always on time. You have all timetables on the site.
You have to exit at the bus stop "LES TEMPLIERS".

For Wednesday it is advised to take either the bus 1 at 8h45 (arrival at 9h02)
or bus 22 at 8h54 (arrival at 9h05)
or bus 12 at at 8H45 (arrival at 8h58)
or bus 100 express at 8H50 (arrival at 8h59)
Magali or some body else will wait for you with the sign Meddays till 9h15.

For Thursday the presentations will be again at building FORUM at campus SophiaTech (see the map).
Bus stop Les Templiers (and then you will visit the LEAT).

For Friday the presentations are in Inria Building (Euler Violet in the morning, Kahn’s buiding in the afternoon) : bus stop Inria.
In both cases the presentations start at 9h00.
We advice you to take either: the bus 1 at 8h15 or latest 8h30
or bus 12 at at 8h45 (might be too late)
or bus 100 express at 8h35 (for Friday but stop at Templiers and go by foot to Inria)
